Depiction by Ruben James
Opening: 3 October, 5.30pm
Exhibition duration: 3 Oct – 25 October
This is the first public exhibition from this up-and-coming Larrakia artist, Ruben James.
Ruben is from a prominent Larrakia family who have been prolific in the art scene in Darwin and well represented in collections, exhibitions and performances nationally over the last decades.
This eclectic and inspired journey through personal emotional growth, connection to family, spirit and country is experimental. Ruben is playing with style, cultural representation and meaning as he draws on the desert style of his Karajarri kin, the sinuous expressions of Larrakia art and bold self-portrait. These works are very deliberate attempts to convey meaning from a very thoughtful and experimental young artist.
In the making of his artworks Ruben practices both the cultural and traditional style of heritage, along with a variety of broader art forms and styles. throughout the making of each of his artworks the aim has been to challenge and evolve his style of art and to expand his artistic and creative capacity. Ruben has been involved in collaborative public murals, the creation of awards for the NIMAs, private and contracted commissions and much more. This first solo exhibition is somewhat biographical, courageous and deeply thoughtful as he explores feelings, spirit, family and country.
